Building a Blue/Green Deployment Program From Zero

Before this program, the credit union had no golden images for Windows machines and no standardized process for rebuilding its critical internal applications. Recovering or re-provisioning a server was an undocumented, tribal-knowledge effort that took weeks, leaving the organization exposed any time a rebuild was actually needed.

I partnered with a newly hired systems administrator to design and build a blue/green deployment program for the credit union’s critical internal applications — creating golden images for Windows machines for the first time and documenting a repeatable build process for the custom applications those images supported.

The result: what had been an undocumented, multi-week rebuild process became a documented, 2-hour build. Beyond the direct time savings, the golden images and documented process gave the organization a real recovery capability where none had existed — any critical internal application could be rebuilt on a known, tested foundation instead of relying on institutional memory.
